2020 Season

By |2020-12-23T21:22:03+13:00December 11th, 2020|Season updates|

My personal best Chamois buck 2020 needs no introduction, it has been one of those years that is testing for a lot of businesses and we are no different. New Zealand took a tough approach on Covid early on, shutting our borders at the end of March and this has essentially kept the virus out. We have avoided any major outbreaks, but the cost of this has meant our tourism sector has taken a huge blow. We missed nearly all of our clients for the season, with only a couple sneaking in for some early season hunts. Reddin and Walton [...]

Wilderness Tahr Hunt 2015

By |2020-12-19T20:43:20+13:00February 15th, 2020|Hunting Stories|

During my 2015 season I had some space free for some hunting for myself and as luck had it we had again drawn a balloted Wilderness tahr area. I headed in with my younger brother Jimmy and ever faithful wife Mirella. Everything was looking good leading up to the trip until I realized my bow would not be ready in time. It was getting new limbs fitted after we (the bow and I) took a tumble a few months earlier. The same thing happened to me 12 months prior on our last Tahr ballot, breaking my bow 10 days before [...]

2019 Season

By |2020-12-19T20:43:30+13:00February 2nd, 2020|Season updates|

2019 was another great season for us all at Hard Yards Hunting, we have been quite busy here over the last few months as our new house has just been finished off. We are now well settled in Twizel, which is a great central base for our hunts and right in the middle of prime Tahr habitat. As always a huge thank you to the hunters who joined us and allowed us to help you achieve your dream hunts. Guide Tim once again has been a great asset this season.2020 is already looking quite busy, we do have one or [...]

Kuiu Peleton 240 Hoodie

By |2019-10-17T20:15:08+13:00August 11th, 2019|Gear tests|

In the spring of 2016(October) I was gifted a 240 Peleton hoodie by James Dorret. At the time I didnt think much of it, but it has become one the most used pieces of gear I own. Kuiu launched the Peleton line in 2015, using Primaflex fabric from Toray. Primaflex is a polyester knit fabric, which is meant to have better wicking and stretch properties than traditional polyester fabrics. This fabric lends it self to base and some mid layers, where fast moisture transfer and comfort are of number one priority. The Peleton 240 hoodie is the heaviest weight of [...]

Hornady ELD-X Review

By |2019-10-17T20:15:09+13:00February 3rd, 2019|Gear tests|

I have long used Hornady projectiles, mainly because they are well priced, the easiest to reliable source and they shoot well in all the rifles I have used them. Recovered from a Bull Tahr at 350 yards, broke one shoulder one way in and under skin on far side of gut bag(quartering shot) Late 2016 I purchased a Tikka .300wsm super lite to be our main client rifle, we have 3 other Tikkas and they are reliable workhorse rifles and I chose .300wsm as an good step up from any other caliber we had, and .30 cal offers a huge [...]
